Avocado bacon citrus salad is a combination of three of the best foods on the planet. Topped off with a spicy jalapeño dressing and some crumbles of queso fresco. This avocado bacon citrus salad is very flavorful and easy to throw together anytime.
My site’s number one fan and number one bacon eater is getting old. He walks with a limp. He farts himself awake and then looks at me like I did it. Oh man, and the snoring… Naturally, I am talking about Weezer the pug.
I would laugh out loud A LOT if you thought I was referencing Mike.
What to do with a 10 year-old dog? It makes me so horribly sad to think of life without the old guy. I know it’s coming; I am just not ready. I feel like the limp is just the start of things.
We took him to the vet because of his limp. They did some X-Ray’s and luckily nothing is broken but it showed he has arthritis. I mean, he is a 32 pound pug. It is kind of shocking he has gone this long without any sort of arthritis flare up given how chunky he is.
Weezer just glared at me, mid-sleep. I think that means he wants me to tell you it’s just his winter weight.
You and me both, Weeze.
Back when I started the blog, pre-kid time, Weezer would sit on my gel mat in the kitchen and snack on food all day long. He would move from sun spot to sun spot in between snacks. He lives a charmed life.
Now, he would rather continue snoozing while I cook. I don’t blame him though, because while the kids are napping and resting, he enjoys his peace and quiet. I also have him on some cannabis (yes you read that right, cannabis) oil to help his joints. Maybe that also has to do with the extra chillness of Weezer.
Yes, I am a crazy hippie dog mom.
He does still magically appear whenever a cheese wrapper is being crinkled or if I am cooking chicken. He used to be all in on bacon. I think now that he is the elder statesman of the house he knows that bacon is high in cholesterol and not good for him. So he normally scoffs at my bacon temptations.
However, just when you think the old guy is losing a step or two, he reappears and walks through my photo shoot set up for this recipe like friggen Godzilla and eats the bacon off the avocado.
All the bacon.
He then casually walked away and went back to sleeping.
Uh, seriously bro?
I am glad you’re up and alive and perky but come on!
Now you know why I don’t have too many varied photos of this avocado, bacon, and citrus salad. Friggen Weezer. Don’t sleep on the avocado bacon citrus salad just like I shouldn’t sleep on the Weeze man.
The salad is super easy to throw together with whatever citrus you have on hand. I just happened to have a lot of blood oranges, grapefruit, and oranges from my mother-in-law. Trying to come up with a clever way to use up all the citrus, aside from vast amounts of sangria, I thought to add bacon and avocado and boom! Perfection!

Avocado, Bacon, and Citrus Salad
Ingredients
For the dressing:
- 1 Tablespoon Zhoug Sauce or Spicy Chimichurri
- 1 Teaspoon Olive Oil
- 1 Tablespoon Orange Juice
- Salt and Pepper
For the Salad:
- 3 Strips of bacon cooked crispy
- 1 Avocado sliced
- 1 Small Blood Orange
- 1 Grapefruit
- 1 Tablespoon Crumbled Queso Fresco
- Salt and Pepper
Instructions
-
Combine the dressing ingredients in a small bowl and whisk until incorporated.
-
Add the sliced avocado to a large serving platter.
-
Remove the fruit segments from the grapefruit and orange. Cut the grapefruit in half, top to bottom (not around the center). Lay one half flat on the cutting board and whittle away the skin, leaving as much fruit as you can behind. Take off all of the thick peel. Slice off the top cap of peel. If there are thick ropes of pith still left on the grapefruit, peel these away. Slice carefully into one segment of the grapefruit, as close to a membrane as possible, and make a slit to loosen the segment of fruit. Make a slit on the other side, as close to the membrane as possible, and loosen the fruit completely.Lift out the segment of fruit. Add it to the plate with the avocado.
-
Chop the bacon into small pieces and sprinkle on top of the avocado and citrus. Top with a teaspoon drizzle of the dressing and crumbled queso fresco.
-
Add more dressing and salt and pepper if needed. You can also totally throw this on top of a bed of romaine or butter lettuce if you need it to be more filling.
