Pepperoni Pizza Strata

December 20, 2021

Pepperoni pizza strata is all the good things about pizza, marinara, cheese, and pepperoni mixed with all the good things about a strata; the eggs, bread, and more cheese of course. Make this the night before and bake first thing in the morning. It is going to be your new favorite way to feed a crowd breakfast.

Freeze! Don’t get scared off by the word strata.

Those of you familiar with the movie, The Family Stone, know a strata is nothing more than an egg and bread-based casserole.

Sort of like a savory bread pudding kind of thing.

I love a good Christmas morning casserole or egg bake.

Normally versions of my breakfast casseroles have had either tater tots or potatoes.

I like the idea of just ripping up a demi-baguette and adding it to the egg mixture.

It is a great way to take out all that pre-holiday stress.

Rip that baguette!

Pepperoni pizza strata is a great make ahead breakfast for when you don’t want to fuss in the morning.

I should also suggest that if you do not eat meat or like pepperoni, try using some diced mushrooms instead of pepperoni.

Then it will be like mushroom pizza strata!

Here is what you will need to make this casserole:

  • butter
  • a demi-baguette or half a baguette
  • pepperoni
  • half a yellow onion
  • garlic
  • eggs
  • heavy whipping cream
  • herbs
  • marinara
  • mozzarella
  • parmesan

That is pretty much it!

The ripped baguette goes into a buttered baking dish.

Mix together the eggs and heavy cream with some of the cheese, salt, crushed red pepper flakes, oregano, parsley, and rosemary.

Crisp up the pepperoni with the onions and garlic.

Mix that into the bread.

Dot the marinara over the top.

You don’t want a lot of sauce because it will overwhelm the egg mixture and make it a little too wet.

Pour the egg mixture over the bread and pepperoni.

The eggs and cream will get absorbed by the bread and make a creamy, eggy sort of custard around the spicy pepperoni.

Top with lots of cheese and herbs.

Cover the baking dish with foil. Let the strata sit overnight.

In the morning, bake the strata covered for 20 minutes and then uncovered for 15 more minutes.

The casserole will be puffed and no longer jiggly in the center when it is cooked completely.

I like to serve the strata with some more crushed red pepper flakes and fresh herbs.

Clearly, if you cannot find fresh herbs, dried oregano and dried basil or rosemary will do just fine.

Use a teaspoon to dot the marinara over the top of the bread and pepperoni. Pour the egg mixture over the bread and pepperoni.
  5. Top with the remaining cheese and then the pepperoni. Sprinkle with a little more dried oregano and crushed red pepper. Cover the pan with foil and refrigerate overnight.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Bake the strata for 20-25 minutes covered. Remove the foil and bake for 15-20 minutes until the cheese starts to turn golden and the center of the strata is puffy and no longer jiggly.
  7. Let the strata cool for 5-10 minutes before cutting into squares and serving.

Notes

Substitute in diced mushrooms or bell peppers instead of pepperoni for a meatless option.

Make sure to grate your own cheese. It helps the cheese melt more evenly and thoroughly.
