Tart Cherry, Walnut, Oatmeal Cookies

October 17, 2023

Tart cherry, walnut, oatmeal cookies are chewy, tart, and sweet all at the same time. Switch up your oatmeal raisin cookies for these fall inspired cookies.

I love an oatmeal based cookie. I wanted to make a fall take on the classic oatmeal raisin cookie. After reading Tom Lake by Ann Patchett, I had a craving for all things cherry and apple.

I didn’t feel like making an apple pie from scratch. Nobody would eat apple muffins aside from me and Mike. The cherry season was over, so the fresh cherry options were limited.

My local Trader Joe’s had dried tart cherries. Boom! Inspiration struck.

Lucky for you all, I also sotted them at Sam’s Club, Walmart, and Meijer. If you can’t the specific tart cherry, go with an unsweetened dried cherry and it will be similar.

I don’t like the overly sweet chocolate with the oatmeal.

The cherry tartness, the chewy oatmeal, and hearty walnut are the perfect trifecta.

I also think that, aside from taking some nut allergies into account, these cookies would be cute for a Christmas cookie exchange. Imagine them with a light dusting of powdered sugar on top!

Too pretty!

Reserve some of the cherries and walnuts to press into the cookie tops before baking if you want to make the cookies more of a show stopper.

I was too excited for cookie time to take the extra time to do this so that’s why you can’t really see too many cherries in the photos.

Bad food blogger!

Here is what you need for the cookies:

  • old fashioned oats
  • flour
  • baking powder
  • baking soda
  • salt
  • cinnamon
  • butter, at room temp
  • sugar
  • brown sugar
  • eggs

Tart cherry, walnut, oatmeal cookies are addictive. I froze some after baking and found myself dipping into them on the nightly.

It is the perfect slightly sweet treat.

This cookie recipe is also a great base for monster or trail mix style of cookies. Feel free to play around and add whatever else you like, maybe dried apples or some nutmeg too!
